Murine Molar Extraction

Murine molar extraction is a surgical technique used to remove one or more mouse molars for studying oral biology, tooth development, wound healing, and bone remodeling. Under anesthesia, researchers stabilize the jaw, loosen the tooth within its periodontal attachment, and extract it with fine instruments while minimizing damage to surrounding gingiva and alveolar bone. The resulting extraction socket undergoes clot formation, inflammation, tissue repair, and osseous regeneration, providing a controlled model of mammalian healing. This procedure supports research on dental tissues, craniofacial biology, biomaterials, infection, and regenerative therapies, while requiring careful postoperative monitoring and animal welfare practices.

The identity of a substance is defined not only by the types of atoms or ions it contains but by the quantity of each type of atom or ion. For example, water, H2O, and hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, are alike in that their respective molecules are composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. However, because a hydrogen peroxide molecule contains two oxygen atoms, as opposed to the water molecule, which has only one, the two substances exhibit very different properties. Atoms and molecules are extremely...

RNA Extraction from Listeria monocytogenes Harvested from Infected Murine Macrophages

Source: Sigal, N., et al. RNA Purification from Intracellularly Grown Listeria monocytogenes in Macrophage Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates RNA extraction from Listeria monocytogenes isolated from infected murine macrophages. The protocol preserves RNA, lyses cells using phenol–chloroform and heat, and separates RNA by centrifugation. Salt and ethanol, combined with cold incubation, promote RNA precipitation. The resulting RNA captures host-induced gene expression, revealing...
