Benchtop Synthesis

Benchtop synthesis is the laboratory-scale preparation of chemical compounds using standard equipment and manageable quantities of reagents, providing a practical bridge between reaction design and larger-scale production. It works by combining reactants in controlled stoichiometric ratios while regulating factors such as solvent, temperature, atmosphere, mixing, and reaction time, followed by workup and purification to isolate the desired product. In chemistry, benchtop synthesis supports the preparation and characterization of organic, inorganic, and materials-based compounds, enabling researchers to test reaction conditions, evaluate selectivity and yield, and produce samples for spectroscopy, biological testing, or scale-up. Its accessible format also strengthens hands-on training in experimental design and safe laboratory practice.

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

The viscoelastic properties of mucus play a critical role in mucociliary clearance. However, traditional mucus rheological techniques require complex and time-consuming approaches. This study provides a detailed protocol for the use of a benchtop rheometer that can rapidly and reliably perform viscoelastic measurements.

Solid Phase Synthesis

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...
