Cardiac Defibrillation

Cardiac defibrillation is a medical intervention that delivers a controlled electrical shock to the heart to terminate life-threatening ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia and restore an organized rhythm. The shock simultaneously depolarizes a critical mass of cardiac muscle, interrupting chaotic electrical activity and allowing the heart’s normal pacemaker systems to reestablish coordinated contraction. Defibrillation is central to emergency treatment of sudden cardiac arrest and can be performed with manual devices or automated external defibrillators, which analyze the rhythm and advise or deliver a shock when appropriate. Rapid use, alongside cardiopulmonary resuscitation, can improve the likelihood of restoring circulation.

A New Single Chamber Implantable Defibrillator with Atrial Sensing: A Practical Demonstration of Sensing and Ease of Implantation

2012

Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may improve detection of atrial fibrillation as well as differentiation of tachycardias. However, this advantage is undermined by complications associated with the second electrode, which is required in conventional dual chamber devices. Therefore, BIOTRONIK has developed a new electrode called the LinoxSMART S DX that, when used in conjunction with the Lumax DX ICD, offers dual-chamber detection without the risks associated with the...

Basic Life Support: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Defibrillation

2015

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the single most important determinant of intact survival in cardiac arrest, and it is critical that all healthcare workers are able to perform this lifesaving technique effectively. Despite the conceptual simplicity of CPR, the reality is that many providers perform it incorrectly, resulting in suboptimal...

Visualization of Streptococcus pneumoniae within Cardiac Microlesions and Subsequent Cardiac Remodeling

2015

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.
