Obesity Surgery Rat

An obesity surgery rat is a laboratory model in which a rat undergoes a bariatric procedure to investigate how surgically changing the gastrointestinal tract affects obesity and metabolism. Operations such as sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass reduce stomach capacity or reroute nutrient flow, altering food intake, nutrient handling, and gut-derived hormonal signals. Researchers monitor body weight, energy balance, glucose regulation, and eating behavior after surgery to distinguish restricted intake from broader physiological adaptations. These models support studies of obesity, diabetes, appetite control, and surgical mechanisms while helping identify biological pathways that may improve metabolic disease treatment.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
