Copd Patients

COPD patients are people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a progressive lung condition characterized by persistent airflow limitation and breathing difficulty. In COPD, chronic inflammation narrows the airways, increases mucus production, and may damage alveolar walls, reducing expiratory airflow and gas exchange; tobacco smoke and other inhaled irritants are major risk factors. Medical evaluation combines symptom history, physical examination, and spirometry to assess obstruction and guide diagnosis and severity classification. Management may include smoking cessation, inhaled bronchodilators, pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccination, and oxygen therapy for selected patients, helping reduce exacerbations, improve exercise capacity, and support quality of life.

COPD: Pathogenesis and Clinical Features

2024

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung conditions that progressively worsen over time, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This cluster of diseases collectively leads to a gradual and irreversible decline in lung function over time. The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...

Talwalkar, MD, and Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT In order to optimize the predictive value of the physical examination, the provider must perform maneuvers correctly. The proper use of drapes is an important component of correctly performing physical examination maneuvers. Skin lesions are missed when "inspection" occurs through clothing, crackles are erroneously reported when the lungs are examined through a...
