Mother-and-child Catheter

A mother-and-child catheter is a coaxial catheter system used to improve access, support, and device delivery during minimally invasive vascular procedures, especially complex coronary interventions. It combines a larger guiding catheter, the mother, with a smaller catheter, the child, that advances through the guide and selectively extends into the target vessel. This configuration provides deeper vessel engagement and greater backup support, helping clinicians navigate tortuous anatomy or cross difficult, calcified, or narrowed lesions. The technique can facilitate delivery of guidewires, balloons, and stents when conventional catheter support is insufficient, expanding treatment options while requiring careful attention to vessel injury and catheter positioning.

Toddler and Preschool Child Exam

2023

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT The purpose of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertion is to infuse medications, perform intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, or inject radioactive tracers for special examination procedures. Placing a PIV is an invasive procedure and requires the use of an aseptic, no-touch technique. Common IV venipuncture sites are the arms and hands in adults and the feet in children. According to...
