Rectal Vault Disinfection

Rectal vault disinfection is a clinical preparation procedure that cleanses the rectal vault to reduce fecal material and microbial contamination before selected medical examinations, procedures, or treatments. It typically combines mechanical cleansing, such as irrigation or an enema, with an appropriate antiseptic or disinfecting solution applied under controlled conditions; the goal is to lower surface bioburden without damaging the rectal mucosa. In medicine, this preparation can improve visualization, support aseptic technique, and help reduce contamination during interventions involving the anorectal region. Proper solution selection, exposure time, patient tolerance, and mucosal safety are essential for effective and appropriate use.
