Tympanic Membrane Puncture

Tympanic membrane puncture is a procedure that creates a small opening in the eardrum, allowing access to the middle ear and helping relieve pressure or remove accumulated fluid. Using a sterile needle or fine instrument, a clinician passes through the membrane under direct visualization; the opening can permit drainage, pressure equalization, or collection of middle-ear material, depending on the purpose. In neuroscience, the procedure is relevant to auditory research because middle-ear conditions influence sound transmission and hearing measurements. It is also used clinically to manage middle-ear effusion and support investigations of disorders affecting auditory function.

Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide: Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms. Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement. Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination.
