Key surface landmarks include the costal margins, xiphoid process, rectus abdominal muscle, linea alba, umbilicus, iliac crest, inguinal ligament, and symphysis pubis. The abdominal exam extends from the xiphoid and costal margins superiorly to the symphysis pubis inferiorly.
