Question 1

What are the four main types of tissues found in multicellular organisms?

Accepted Answer

The four major tissue types are nervous tissue, which controls information; muscle tissue, including skeletal, cardiac, and smooth varieties for movement; epithelial tissue, which covers and protects boundaries; and connective tissue, which provides support. Most organs contain all four types arranged in specific structural patterns that give organs their distinctive characteristics and functions.

Question 2

How is epithelial tissue structured to protect the body?

Accepted Answer

Epithelial tissue consists of tightly packed cells arranged in single simple layers or stratified multiple layers stacked upon each other. Stratified epithelium, such as skin, protects against abrasion because outer cells subject to damage are replaced through division of cells underneath. Epithelial cells vary in shape from squamous and flattened to cuboidal and columnar, with the nucleus conforming to each form.

Question 3

What role does connective tissue play in supporting epithelial layers?

Accepted Answer

Connective tissue lies directly beneath epithelial tissue sheets and provides structural support through the extracellular matrix and support proteins. Nutrients diffuse up from blood vessels within this connective tissue layer to nourish the epithelial cells above. This arrangement ensures epithelial cells receive essential nourishment while maintaining the barrier function of epithelial tissue.

Question 4

How do muscle tissues enable body movement?

Accepted Answer

Muscle tissue consists of long, thin muscle cells called muscle fibers that can contract and expand. The three main types—cardiac muscle in the heart, skeletal muscles attached to bones, and smooth muscle in visceral organs—work together to enable movement of the body and internal organs. This contractile ability is the defining functional characteristic of all muscle tissue.

Question 5

What functions does nervous tissue perform in the body?

Accepted Answer

Nervous tissue, composed of neurons and supporting glial cells, sends, transports, and receives information through electrochemical signaling. Beyond controlling movement through muscles, nervous tissue detects sensory stimuli and directs many body activities. A bundle of neurons forms a nerve, while concentrated nervous tissue in the brain coordinates overall body function.

Question 6

Why do different epithelial cell shapes exist in various tissues?

Accepted Answer

Epithelial cell shape varies based on tissue function and location. Squamous flattened cells facilitate diffusion, cuboidal cells are involved in secretion and absorption, and columnar cells often line absorptive surfaces like intestines. The nucleus conforms to each cell shape, allowing the cell structure to optimize its specific role in the tissue.

Question 7

How do tissues relate to organ structure and function?

Accepted Answer

Organs are composed of groups of tissues with specialized functions working together. Most organs contain all four tissue types—epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous—arranged in specific structural patterns. These distinctive arrangements of tissues provide each organ with its unique characteristics and enable it to perform its specialized functions within the body.
