Question 1

Does an object accelerate when moving at constant speed in a straight line?

Accepted Answer

No. An object moving at constant speed in a straight line experiences no acceleration because velocity remains unchanged. Acceleration occurs only when velocity changes in magnitude, direction, or both. On curved paths or when speed changes, acceleration is present because the velocity vector is changing.

Question 2

Why does an object on a curved path accelerate even at constant speed?

Accepted Answer

On a curved path, the direction of motion continuously changes, which means the velocity vector is constantly changing direction. Since acceleration exists whenever velocity changes—whether in speed or direction—an object moving at constant speed on a curve is always accelerating. The acceleration vector points toward the center of the curve's curvature.

Question 3

What is the direction of acceleration when an object speeds up on a curved path?

Accepted Answer

When an object speeds up on a curved path, the acceleration vector points ahead of the center of curvature. This combined acceleration reflects both the change in speed and the change in direction. The vector direction indicates how the velocity is changing at that moment.

Question 4

How does acceleration direction change when an object slows down?

Accepted Answer

When an object slows down, its acceleration points opposite to the direction of motion, behind the center of curvature on a curved path. This negative acceleration, or deceleration, indicates the velocity is decreasing. The acceleration vector always points in the direction of velocity change, not necessarily the direction of motion.

Question 5

Can acceleration point opposite to an object's direction of motion?

Accepted Answer

Yes. When an object slows down, acceleration points opposite to its motion direction. This occurs because acceleration follows the direction of velocity change, not motion direction. In a coordinate system, this appears as negative acceleration, causing the object to eventually stop and reverse direction.

Question 6

What happens to an object with constant negative acceleration moving in the positive direction?

Accepted Answer

An object with constant negative acceleration in the positive direction will gradually slow down, come to rest, and then reverse direction. After reversing, it continues accelerating in the negative direction, eventually passing through the origin. The negative acceleration vector consistently points opposite to the initial motion.

Question 7

How does acceleration direction differ between straight-line and curved-path motion?

Accepted Answer

On a straight line, acceleration aligns with the path direction. On a curved path, acceleration points toward the center of curvature, perpendicular to the instantaneous velocity. Understanding average and instantaneous velocity vectors helps clarify how acceleration direction relates to velocity changes in different motion types.
