Question 1

What is the purpose of cleaning before disinfection or sterilization?

Accepted Answer

Cleaning removes organic materials like body fluids and inorganic materials like dust from surfaces and equipment using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaners. This step is essential because foreign materials on device surfaces interfere with the effectiveness of high-level disinfection and sterilization processes.

Question 2

How does disinfection differ from sterilization in infection control?

Accepted Answer

Disinfection eliminates most microorganisms except bacterial spores from inanimate objects using methods like chemical disinfection or wet pasteurization. Sterilization destroys all microorganisms, including spores, on surfaces or fluids using steam, dry heat, hydrogen peroxide plasma, or ethylene oxide. Sterilization is more thorough and used for equipment entering sterile body areas.

Question 3

What are critical items and why must they be sterilized?

Accepted Answer

Critical items are instruments or devices that enter sterile tissue or the vascular system, such as surgical instruments, cardiac catheters, and implants. These items must be sterilized because they pose a high risk of infection when contaminated with microorganisms, especially bacterial spores, which can cause serious complications.

Question 4

What disinfection level is appropriate for endoscopes and respiratory equipment?

Accepted Answer

Endoscopes and respiratory equipment are semicritical items that contact mucous membranes or nonintact skin and must undergo high-level disinfection or sterilization. High-level disinfectants destroy most vegetative bacteria, fungi, and viruses while requiring exposure times such as 20 minutes for 2% glutaraldehyde to eliminate microorganisms effectively.

Question 5

Why do non-critical items require only low-level disinfection?

Accepted Answer

Non-critical items like crutches, bedpans, and blood pressure cuffs contact only intact skin, which serves as a reliable barrier to most germs. Because intact skin provides natural protection, these items need only low-level disinfection, which kills microbes in approximately 10 minutes, making the process efficient and cost-effective.

Question 6

What steps are involved in the proper cleaning procedure for contaminated equipment?

Accepted Answer

Rinse contaminated objects under running water to remove organic material, then wash with soap and warm water before rinsing thoroughly. Use a brush to remove debris in seams or grooves, open hinged items for cleaning, and rinse again. Finally, dry the item and prepare it for sterilization or disinfection based on its classification.

Question 7

How do cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization help prevent healthcare-associated infections?

Accepted Answer

These three methods break the chain of infection by removing or destroying microorganisms on surfaces and equipment used in patient care. By eliminating pathogens at different levels based on item classification, they prevent disease transmission and reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections that could compromise patient safety.
