Question 1

What are the main components of pancreatic juice?

Accepted Answer

Pancreatic juice is a colorless liquid composed of water, salts, sodium bicarbonate, and enzymes. The epithelial lining of pancreatic ducts secretes the non-enzymatic components, while acinar cells produce digestive enzymes. Together, these components enable the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids in the small intestine.

Question 2

How does pancreatic juice neutralize stomach acid?

Accepted Answer

Pancreatic juice contains sodium bicarbonate secreted by the epithelial lining of the ducts, making it alkaline. This alkalinity buffers the acidity of chyme entering the duodenum, creating an ideal pH environment for digestive enzymes to function effectively in the small intestine.

Question 3

What hormones trigger pancreatic juice secretion?

Accepted Answer

Two hormones regulate pancreatic juice secretion: secretin, released when acidic chyme reaches the duodenum, stimulates pancreatic juice delivery to the small intestine. Cholecystokinin, released after a fatty meal, also stimulates enzyme-rich pancreatic secretions. Together, these hormones ensure timely delivery for efficient digestion.

Question 4

Why are pancreatic proteases produced as inactive precursors?

Accepted Answer

Proteases are produced as inactive precursors called zymogens to prevent them from digesting pancreatic tissue. Trypsin is secreted as trypsinogen and activated in the duodenum by enterokinase. This activation cascade protects the pancreas while enabling efficient protein digestion into absorbable amino acids.

Question 5

What types of enzymes does pancreatic juice contain?

Accepted Answer

Pancreatic juice contains amylases for digesting starch, lipases for breaking down lipids, and nucleases for digesting nucleic acids. However, the majority of enzymes are proteases, including trypsin, chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase, and elastase. These enzymes work together to break down nutrients efficiently.

Question 6

How does trypsin activate other pancreatic proteases?

Accepted Answer

Once trypsinogen is activated to trypsin by enterokinase in the duodenum, activated trypsin triggers a cascade that activates other protease precursors. This includes chymotrypsinogen becoming chymotrypsin, procarboxypeptidase becoming carboxypeptidase, and proelastase becoming elastase. This coordinated activation enables efficient protein digestion.

Question 7

What is the role of acinar cells in pancreatic juice production?

Accepted Answer

Acinar cells in the pancreas produce and secrete digestive enzymes found in pancreatic juice. These cells synthesize amylases, lipases, nucleases, and proteases in their inactive forms. The acinar cells work alongside epithelial duct cells, which secrete bicarbonate, to create pancreatic juice essential for nutrient breakdown.
