Question 1

How are the three main types of building stone classified?

Accepted Answer

Building stones are classified into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks based on their geological formation. Igneous rocks form from solidified magma or lava, sedimentary rocks develop through accumulation and compression of sediments by water or overlying deposits, and metamorphic rocks originate as igneous or sedimentary but change characteristics due to intense heat and pressure.

Question 2

Why is granite preferred for exposed building surfaces?

Accepted Answer

Granite, an igneous rock, is suitable for portions of buildings exposed to severe weathering because of its durability and resistance to weathering. Its strength and resistance to environmental degradation make it ideal for exterior applications where stones must withstand harsh conditions and maintain structural integrity over time.

Question 3

What are the common uses of limestone and sandstone in construction?

Accepted Answer

Limestone and sandstone are sedimentary rocks available in severely stratified or homogeneous forms. These stones are often used for decorative elements such as windowsills and lintels due to their easier workability and aesthetic qualities, making them suitable for both functional and ornamental building components.

Question 4

How does slate's splitting property make it useful in construction?

Accepted Answer

Slate, a metamorphic rock, easily splits into sheets, making it highly suitable for roofing, paving, and wall facing applications. This natural splitting characteristic allows slate to be efficiently processed into thin, uniform layers ideal for weather-resistant coverings and decorative surfaces.

Question 5

What makes marble valuable for high-end interior finishes?

Accepted Answer

Marble, a metamorphic rock, can be easily polished and carved, making it favored for high-end finishes. It is used in wall panels, column facings, window stools, and flooring applications where its aesthetic appeal and workability create elegant, durable interior surfaces.

Question 6

How is quartzite utilized in concrete construction?

Accepted Answer

Quartzite is a building stone commonly used as gravel and aggregate in concrete construction. Its hardness and durability make it an effective component for strengthening concrete mixtures, contributing to the overall structural performance and longevity of concrete elements in various applications.

Question 7

What specialized applications do travertine and other uncommon stones serve?

Accepted Answer

Travertine, a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, along with alabaster, greenstone, schist, serpentine, and soapstone, are grouped for their unique properties and specialized applications. These stones are selected for specific construction needs where their distinctive characteristics provide functional or aesthetic advantages.
