Accurate distance measurement requires carefully applying necessary corrections for standardization errors, temperature variations, and ground slope conditions.
Standardization errors arise because of damage to equipment or if the equipment has repairs or the weather changes affect it. This error is identified by comparing the equipment’s reading against a standard.
Steel tapes expand when heated and contract when cooled. On a hot, sunny day, steel tape can become much warmer than the surrounding air, while partly cloudy days often cause the most challenging variations in tape length.
The coefficient of linear expansion of tape is used to determine the correction in the tape in the measurement.
If a tape is stretched along a slope, the goal is to determine the corresponding horizontal distance measured.
The correction is obtained from the length of the slope and the horizontal distance, which is assumed to be equal to the sloping length in the case of a single tape length.
Finally, the calculated corrections are added to the measured length to obtain the corrected distance.
