Question 1

How do archaeal cell membranes differ from those of bacteria and eukaryotes?

Accepted Answer

Archaeal membranes contain ether-linked isoprenoid lipids, which differ structurally from the ester-linked isoprenoids found in bacteria and eukaryotes. This unique composition provides exceptional stability under extreme environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and chemical stress, enabling archaea to survive in harsh habitats.

Question 2

What makes archaea evolutionarily significant in the three domain system of life?

Accepted Answer

Archaea occupy a unique evolutionary position, sharing molecular traits with both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Their RNA polymerases and transcription factors resemble eukaryotic versions, while their prokaryotic cell structure bridges these domains. This intermediate position provides critical insights into the last universal common ancestor and early cellular evolution within the three domain system of life.

Question 3

What are the main metabolic strategies archaea use to obtain energy?

Accepted Answer

Archaea employ two primary metabolic strategies: chemoorganotrophy, where organic compounds like glucose are oxidized for energy, and chemolithotrophy, where inorganic compounds such as sulfur and ammonia are oxidized. This metabolic diversity allows archaea to thrive in extreme environments by utilizing diverse energy sources unavailable to other organisms.

Question 4

How do archaeal cell walls differ from bacterial cell walls?

Accepted Answer

Unlike bacteria, archaea lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls. Instead, archaeal cell walls contain diverse structures including pseudomurein (structurally similar to peptidoglycan), polysaccharides, proteins, glycoproteins such as S-layers, or combinations of these macromolecules, providing flexibility to adapt to various environmental conditions.

Question 5

What industrial applications rely on archaeal enzymes and metabolic capabilities?

Accepted Answer

Thermostable enzymes from extremophilic archaea are widely used in biotechnology, including DNA polymerases for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Archaea also contribute to biofuel production such as cellulosic ethanol generation and bioremediation, where their ability to degrade pollutants under extreme conditions is harnessed for environmental cleanup.

Question 6

How do methanogens contribute to carbon cycling and environmental processes?

Accepted Answer

Methanogens are archaea that produce methane through anaerobic metabolism, playing a significant role in carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, certain archaea engage in anaerobic methane oxidation, a critical process for controlling methane levels in specific ecosystems and maintaining environmental balance.

Question 7

What ecological roles do archaea play in extreme and moderate environments?

Accepted Answer

Archaea thrive in extreme habitats like hot springs, hydrothermal vents, and acidic waters, as well as moderate environments including soil and the human microbiome. They form symbiotic relationships with other organisms, such as aiding digestion in ruminant guts by breaking down complex organic compounds, and contribute to nutrient recycling across diverse ecosystems.
