Biomimetic Neurostimulation

Biomimetic neurostimulation is a bioengineering approach that uses stimulation patterns designed to resemble the timing, spatial organization, or coding strategies of natural neural activity, rather than applying uniform pulses. By delivering electrical stimuli through electrodes or implanted interfaces, it can recruit neural populations according to pulse timing, amplitude, waveform, and location, helping evoke more physiologically relevant responses. This approach is being investigated for restoring sensory feedback, controlling motor function, treating neurological disorders, and improving neural prostheses, while biomimetic design may enhance stimulation selectivity and compatibility with endogenous neural signaling.

2015

Bacterial attachment to host cells is a key step during host colonization and infection. This protocol describes the generation of polymer-coupled recombinant adhesins as biomimetic materials which allow analysis of the contribution of individual adhesins to these processes, independent of other bacterial factors.

2019

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been shown to be effective as an adjunct treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). VNS leads to antidepressive and antisuicidal effects and quality of life improvements. This protocol offers a step-by-step guide to managing and adjusting a vagus nerve stimulator for efficient treatment of TRD.
