Laboratory Reagents

Laboratory reagents are chemical or biological substances used to produce, control, or detect reactions in scientific experiments, making them essential for reliable measurement and manipulation of biological systems. In bioengineering, reagents work through defined interactions such as buffering pH, catalyzing enzymatic reactions, binding target molecules, or labeling cells and biomaterials for detection; their performance depends on concentration, temperature, purity, and storage. Researchers use them in molecular assays, cell culture, biomaterial fabrication, and diagnostic development to analyze biological function, assemble engineered systems, and validate experimental results. Careful selection and standardization improve reproducibility, safety, and translation from laboratory studies to clinical or industrial applications.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

EDTA: Auxiliary Complexing Reagents

EDTA titrations are usually carried out in highly basic conditions, where the fully deprotonated form of EDTA, Y4−, actively complexes with the free metal ions in the solution. Several metal ions precipitate as hydrous oxide (hydroxides, oxides, or oxyhydroxides) under these conditions, lowering the concentration of free metal ions in the solution. For this reason, auxiliary complexing agents or ligands such as ammonia, tartrate, citrate, or triethanolamine are used in EDTA titrations to...

Measuring Mass in the Laboratory

The analytical balance is the common piece of equipment in the scientific laboratory. These highly precise instruments can measure down to ten thousandths or even hundred thousandths of a gram. The triple beam balance is a type of scale that uses counterweights on a three rider beams to counterbalance the sample in the pan. On the other hand, modern analytical balances use a complex system of electronic sensors to accurately mass a substance. The analytical balance is so sensitive that it...
