Phase Inversion Temperature

Phase Inversion Temperature (PIT) is the temperature at which a surfactant-stabilized emulsion changes its preferred structure, causing the dispersed and continuous phases to exchange roles. In systems containing nonionic surfactants, heating alters surfactant hydration and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, reducing affinity for water until the formulation reaches a low-interfacial-tension state and undergoes inversion. This behavior supports the temperature-inversion method for producing fine emulsions with controlled droplet size and can guide the formulation of biomaterials, pharmaceutical carriers, and other bioengineering systems. Controlling composition, heating rate, and cooling conditions helps improve emulsion stability and reproducibility.

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...

Inverse Trigonometric Functions

Inverse trigonometric functions are fundamental mathematical tools that reverse the actions of standard trigonometric functions. While trigonometric functions map angles to ratios, inverse trigonometric functions perform the opposite operation by mapping a ratio back to its corresponding angle. These functions are essential in various applications, particularly in determining angles when given specific distances, such as calculating elevation angles in navigation and engineering. For a function...

Phase Diagrams

2020

A phase diagram combines plots of pressure versus temperature for the liquid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-gas phase-transition equilibria of a substance. These diagrams indicate the physical states that exist under specific conditions of pressure and temperature and also provide the pressure dependence of the phase-transition temperatures (melting points, sublimation points, boiling points). Regions or areas labeled solid, liquid, and gas represent single phases, while lines or curves represent...

Contrast enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows comprehensive in vivo assessment of the heart in small animal models of cardiovascular disease. Here we detail the procedures to perform CMR imaging, reconstruction and analysis using Small Animal Lock-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) in rats.
