Fly Anesthesia

Fly Anesthesia is a laboratory method for temporarily immobilizing flies so researchers can handle, sort, examine, and manipulate them safely. In Drosophila work, carbon dioxide exposure commonly induces reversible unconsciousness by disrupting neural activity, while controlled cooling can provide an alternative based on reduced physiological activity. This enables precise collection of individuals, sex determination, phenotype scoring, genetic crosses, microinjection, and dissection. Because anesthetic duration and recovery can affect survival, behavior, and experimental measurements, researchers standardize exposure conditions and minimize handling time.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...

Validation of Hyperbaric Pressure System with Xenon Anesthesia for Drosophila melanogaster

2026

Gases that seem harmless at atmospheric pressure can induce behaviors like narcosis under hyperbaric conditions. Conventional hyperbaric pressure chambers are costly and labor-intensive. This study presents a straightforward, low-cost method for examining xenon's effects on Drosophila melanogaster at moderate pressures below 4 atm.

Drosophila Courtship Conditioning: A Method to Test Learning and Memory In Flies

2023

This video describes a classical conditioning assay that tests learning and memory in Drosophila, called courtship conditioning. The assay is based on the reduction of male courtship after experiencing a rejection by a non-receptive premated female. The example protocol shows a setup for the procedure that can be used to assess short- and long-term memory.

Fly Climbing Assay: A Method to Test General Locomotion in Drosophila melanogaster
