Regeneration Kinetics

Regeneration kinetics describes the rates and temporal patterns by which damaged biological tissues or organisms restore structure and function, making it useful for comparing regenerative capacity across systems. It is assessed by tracking changes such as wound closure, cell proliferation, tissue remodeling, and functional recovery over time, often through time-course measurements that distinguish initial repair from later maturation. In biology, these measurements reveal how signals, cell behavior, and the tissue environment shape regeneration and help researchers evaluate developmental processes, disease-related repair, and responses to injury or experimental treatments. Quantifying kinetics can also guide strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

2020

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...

Enzyme Assays and Kinetics

2023

Enzyme kinetics describes the catalytic effects of enzymes, which are biomolecules that facilitate chemical reactions necessary for living organisms. Enzymes act on molecules, referred to as substrates, to form products. Enzyme kinetic parameters are determined via assays that directly or indirectly measure changes in substrate or product concentration over time. This video will cover the basic principles of enzyme kinetics (including rate equations) and kinetic models. The concepts governing...

We apply label-free protein interaction analysis using Biacore X100 for structure-function analysis of the binding of several cystatin B mutants to papain through kinetic characterization. Calibration-free concentration analysis (CFCA) measures the concentration of protein with retained binding activity without the need for a standard curve. We show that confirmation of concentrations using CFCA increases the reliability of the kinetic analysis and that kinetic constants can reliably be...

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
