Articulating Sealer

An articulating sealer is a surgical instrument with a pivoting, energy-delivering jaw that enables tissue grasping, sealing, and division, particularly in confined operative spaces. Its jaws apply controlled pressure while bipolar electrical energy generates heat, denaturing collagen and elastin to fuse tissue layers and close blood vessels before transection. In cancer research and oncology surgery, articulating sealers support minimally invasive tumor resections by improving access around complex anatomy and reducing the need for separate ligation and cutting tools. Their use can streamline procedures and facilitate investigation of surgical precision, hemostasis, tissue handling, and postoperative outcomes.

Articulations of the Vertebral Column

In addition to being held together by the intervertebral discs, adjacent vertebrae also articulate with each other at synovial joints formed between the superior and inferior articular processes called zygapophysial joints (facet joints). These are plane joints that provide for only limited motions between the vertebrae. The orientation of the articular processes at these joints varies in different regions of the vertebral column and serves to determine the types of motions available in each...

Ultrasound imaging can be used to display the shape and movements of the tongue in real time during speech. The images can be used to determine the nature of speech sound errors. Visual feedback of the tongue can be used to facilitate improvements in speech sound production in clinical populations.

The McGurk Effect

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Spoken language, a singular human achievement, relies heavily on specialized perceptual mechanisms. One important feature of language perception mechanisms is that they simultaneously rely on auditory and visual information. This makes sense, because until modern times, a person could expect that most language would be heard in face-to-face interactions. And because producing specific speech sounds requires precise articulation,...
