Chemical Safety Protocols

Chemical safety protocols are organized procedures for identifying hazards, reducing exposure, and preventing accidents during the handling, storage, use, and disposal of chemicals. They work by combining hazard communication and risk assessment with controls such as appropriate personal protective equipment, engineering safeguards, compatible storage, careful labeling, and established procedures for spills, fires, and exposure; these measures interrupt pathways by which chemical hazards can harm people or the environment. In chemistry laboratories, protocols support consistent decision-making, regulatory compliance, and responsible waste management while protecting researchers and students. Applying them systematically improves experimental reliability and helps build a durable culture of safety across research, teaching, and industrial settings.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Although researchers are generally knowledgeable about procedures and safety precautions required for biosafety level 1 or 2 (BSL-1/2) experiments, they may not be familiar with experimental procedures in BSL-4 suit laboratories. This article provides a detailed visual demonstration of BSL-4 suit laboratory systems check, laboratory entry, movement, and exit procedures.

The protocols describe two in vitro developmental toxicity test systems (UKK and UKN1) based on human embryonic stem cells and transcriptome studies. The test systems predict human developmental toxicity hazard, and may contribute to reduce animal studies, costs and the time required for chemical safety testing.

Handling Chemical Spills

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Since chemicals are commonly used for laboratory research purposes, it is extremely important to be adequately prepared to handle chemical spills or accidental release of hazardous chemicals, which can happen at any time. No matter how minor a spill may be, the inability to respond in an emergency situation could severely endanger public health or the environment. All chemical spills must be properly...

Survey Safety

Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...
