Conformer Energy

Conformer energy is the relative potential energy of a molecule’s distinct conformations, or arrangements produced by rotation about single bonds without breaking covalent bonds. It matters because energy differences determine which conformers are most populated and how molecular shape influences chemical behavior. As dihedral angles change, steric repulsion, torsional strain, electrostatic interactions, and intramolecular hydrogen bonding alter the potential energy; conformer populations can therefore be estimated using Boltzmann relationships. In chemistry, conformer energy analysis supports conformational assignments, stereochemical and reactivity predictions, interpretation of spectroscopy, and computational modeling while helping researchers assess how flexible structures bind or transform.

Conformity

Conformity is the change in a person’s behavior to go along with the group, even if that person does not agree with the group. Asch’s Original Study Solomon Asch conducted several experiments in the 1950s to determine how people are affected by the thoughts and behaviors of other people. In one study, a group of participants was shown a series of printed line segments of different lengths: a, b, and c. Participants were then shown a fourth line segment: x. They were asked to identify which...

A Minority of One: Conformity to Group Norms

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to group...

Spatial Separation of Molecular Conformers and Clusters

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)

2023

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a phenomenon used to investigate close-range biochemical interactions. In FRET, a donor photoluminescent molecule can non-radiatively transfer energy to an acceptor molecule if their respective emission and absorbance spectra overlap. The amount of energy transferred—and consequently the overall emission of sample—depends on the proximity of an acceptor-donor pair of photoluminescent molecules. FRET analysis is combined with other biochemistry...

What is Energy?

2020

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...
