Macroporous Polymer Monolith

Macroporous polymer monoliths are rigid, highly porous polymer materials with interconnected pores that provide a continuous network for fluid transport and chemical interactions. They are typically formed by polymerizing functional monomers and cross-linkers in the presence of porogenic solvents; phase separation during polymerization creates the macroporous structure, while the monolith’s composition controls its surface chemistry and permeability. In chemistry, these materials serve as stationary phases for chromatography, supports for catalysts and immobilized reagents, and flow-through media for separations, synthesis, and sensing. Their tunable pore architecture enables efficient mass transfer and compact device design.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
