Monolithic Aerogel

A monolithic aerogel is a continuous, three-dimensional porous solid formed from a gel, with a rigid structure that contains a very high fraction of empty space. In chemistry, it is produced by forming a wet gel and removing its liquid phase under carefully controlled drying conditions, often through supercritical drying, to limit capillary forces and preserve the nanoscale pore network. The resulting material combines low density, high surface area, and low thermal conductivity, supporting applications in thermal insulation, adsorption, catalysis, sensing, and advanced materials research. Its monolithic form also enables practical handling and integration into devices.

2016

A new way for the production of biopolymer-based aerogels by carbon dioxide (CO2) induced gelation is shown. The technique utilizes pressurized carbon dioxide (5 MPa) for the production of biopolymer hydrogels and supercritical CO2 (12 MPa) to convert gels into aerogels. The only solvents needed besides CO2 are water and ethanol.

This procedure describes how to encapsulate cytochrome c (cyt. c) in silica (SiO2) sol-gels, process these gels to form bioaerogels, and use these bioaerogels to rapidly recognize nitric oxide (NO) through a gas-phase reaction. This type of protocol may aid in the future development of biosensors or other bioanalytical devices.

2026

This study successfully uses MIL-96(Al) Metal-Organic Frameworks particles to stabilize Pickering emulsions, which serve as templates to form mechanically robust, hierarchically porous monolithic materials. This method allows scalable MOF shaping while preserving crystal integrity. Tuning formulation is key to controlling pore size, interconnectivity, permeability, and robustness.
