Tms Signal

The TMS signal is the reference resonance produced by tetramethylsilane in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, where it defines the zero-point for chemical-shift measurements. Its twelve equivalent protons generate one sharp signal because rapid molecular symmetry places all hydrogen atoms in the same magnetic environment; strong electronic shielding positions this resonance far upfield, at 0 ppm. Because TMS is chemically inert, volatile, and generally unreactive toward many samples, chemists add it as an internal standard when assigning proton or carbon signals. Comparing sample resonances with TMS helps identify functional groups, assess molecular structure, and interpret chemical environments quantitatively.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
