Zeolites

Zeolites are crystalline, microporous materials with ordered frameworks that create uniform channels and cavities, making them important in chemistry for selective adsorption, ion exchange, and catalysis. Their structures commonly contain linked silica and alumina tetrahedra, while charge-balancing cations and molecular-sized pores control which ions or molecules can enter, move through, or react within the framework. These properties support water softening, gas separation, purification, detergent formulation, and catalytic processes such as hydrocarbon conversion. Because zeolite composition, pore size, and acidity can be tailored, zeolites remain valuable for designing efficient separation media, heterogeneous catalysts, and materials for environmental and industrial applications.
