Infection Prevention

Infection prevention is the coordinated use of evidence-based measures to stop pathogens from spreading and causing disease, making it essential for safe clinical care. It works by interrupting the chain of infection through practices such as hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, environmental cleaning, sterilization of instruments, respiratory precautions, and vaccination when indicated. In hospitals and other healthcare settings, these measures reduce healthcare-associated infections, protect patients and workers, and limit antimicrobial-resistant organisms. Effective infection prevention also depends on risk assessment, surveillance, staff training, and consistent implementation of standard and transmission-based precautions.

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2023

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility. The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Implant-associated infection is a significant clinical complication. This study describes an approach using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to prevent implant-associated infections, presents the protocol for preparing PRP with constant platelet concentration, and reports the newly identified antimicrobial properties of PRP and related protocols for examining such antimicrobial properties in vitro.

This manuscript describes the procedure to fabricate and characterize Griffithsin-modified poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) electrospun fibers that demonstrate potent adhesive and antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection in vitro. Methods used to synthesize, surface-modify, and characterize the resulting morphology, conjugation, and desorption of Griffithsin from surface-modified fibers are described.

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...
