Postoperative Nursing Care

Postoperative nursing care is the coordinated assessment and support provided after surgery to promote recovery, prevent complications, and help patients regain function. Nurses monitor vital signs, pain, consciousness, respiratory status, fluid balance, and the surgical site while using interventions such as wound care, medication administration, breathing exercises, early mobilization, and infection prevention. Care is adjusted to the procedure and the patient’s condition, with prompt recognition of bleeding, respiratory compromise, impaired circulation, or other abnormal findings. Through patient education, nutritional support, discharge planning, and communication with the surgical team, postoperative nursing care improves safety, supports healing, and promotes a smooth transition from hospital to home.
