Bacterial Suspension Culture

Bacterial suspension culture is a laboratory and bioprocess method for growing bacteria as dispersed cells in a liquid nutrient medium, enabling controlled measurement and production. Agitation keeps cells suspended while oxygen transfer, temperature, pH, nutrient availability, and culture density influence growth; cells typically progress through lag, exponential, stationary, and decline phases. In engineering, these cultures support strain characterization, recombinant protein and metabolite production, wastewater treatment studies, and bioreactor design. Monitoring optical density, dissolved oxygen, and substrate consumption helps researchers optimize cultivation conditions, improve scale-up, and evaluate the performance of engineered microbial systems.

This video describes a method for generating a mouse model that mimics bacterial endophthalmitis – an intraocular infection resulting from a bacterial invasion into the eye’s vitreous cavity – via intravitreal injection of a bacterial suspension into the eye. This mouse model helps study the disease mechanism and evaluate therapeutics for it.
