Grout Detachment

Grout detachment is the loss of adhesion or physical separation between grout and the surfaces it is intended to bond, such as concrete, masonry, tiles, or embedded components. It occurs when bond strength is exceeded by stresses from shrinkage, differential movement, moisture, thermal changes, vibration, or applied loads, often producing cracks, voids, debonded areas, or hollow-sounding regions. In engineering, evaluating grout detachment helps identify construction defects, material incompatibility, and developing structural or waterproofing problems. Inspection methods and targeted repairs, including removal and replacement or injection-based treatment where appropriate, can restore load transfer, sealing, durability, and service performance.

Creating experimental retinal detachments with a reproducible and sustained height of detachment, and without subretinal hemorrhage, is important for studying the pathophysiology of photoreceptor cell loss in retinal disease and evaluating potential therapeutic interventions. Here, we report such a method in detail.

This manuscript details an optimized inoculation protocol that uses detached maize leaf sheaths for reproducible cytological, physiological, and molecular studies of maize interactions with fungal plant pathogens. The leaf sheaths facilitate real-time observation of cellular interactions between the living plant and fungus in unfixed tissues.
