Modular Robotics

Modular robotics is an engineering approach in which robots are built from interchangeable modules that can be combined, rearranged, or replaced to perform different tasks. Each module may provide a structural, sensing, computing, or actuation function, while standardized mechanical and electrical interfaces allow modules to connect and communicate as a coordinated system. This reconfigurability enables robots to adapt their shape and capabilities to changing environments, simplifying maintenance and supporting rapid prototyping. Applications include manufacturing, search and rescue, space exploration, medical devices, and educational platforms, where modular designs can reduce development costs and extend robot lifetimes.

Here, an automated workflow to perform modular DNA "device" assembly using a modular cloning DNA assembly method on liquid-handling robots is presented. The protocol uses an intuitive software tool for generating liquid handler picklists for combinatorial DNA device library generation, which we demonstrate using two liquid handling platforms.
