Perceptual Color Modeling

Perceptual color modeling represents color according to how humans see and distinguish it rather than relying only on physical measurements of light. These models transform device-dependent values, such as RGB or spectral data, into perceptual color spaces designed to separate attributes such as lightness, hue, and chroma, enabling more meaningful estimates of visual difference. In engineering, perceptual color modeling supports display calibration, digital imaging, computer vision, printing, and color quality control. By relating numerical color measurements to human observers, it improves consistency across devices and helps engineers design systems that reproduce, compare, and communicate color more reliably.

Finding Your Blind Spot and Perceptual Filling-in

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In the back of everyone's eye is a small piece of neural tissue called the retina. The retina has photosensitive cells that respond to stimulation by light. The responses of these cells are sent into the brain through the optic nerve, a bundle of neural fibers. In each retina there is a place somewhere in the periphery where the outputs from retinal cells collect and the bundled optic nerve exits to the brain. At that location,...

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Training Synesthetic Letter-color Associations by Reading in Color

2014

Reading in color is a new method for training letter-color associations that are typically found only in grapheme-color synesthetes. It involves an implicit form of training that has potential for long-term associative training methods because the training is a byproduct of reading and any text can be colored.

Perceptual Constancy

2024

Perceptual constancy is the ability to recognize that objects remain consistent and unchanged even when their appearance varies due to changes in sensory input. There are four main types of perceptual constancy: size constancy, shape constancy, color constancy, and brightness constancy. Size constancy is the recognition that an object remains the same size, even when its image on the retina changes. For instance, a bus is perceived to be large enough to carry people, even if it looks tiny from...

Perceptual Maps

Perceptual maps are visual tools that help businesses understand how customers perceive their products or brands compared to competitors. It shows how people perceive products or services based on specific attributes. The process of creating a perceptual map involves: • Identifying Key Attributes: First, businesses must determine what essential qualities or attributes matter to customers in their industry. For example, if the business sells smartphones, important attributes include price,...
