Sol-gel Synthesis

Sol-gel synthesis is a chemical method for producing ceramics, glasses, and hybrid materials from molecular precursors, often at lower temperatures than conventional solid-state processing. In this process, metal alkoxides or related compounds undergo hydrolysis and condensation to form a colloidal sol, which evolves into a three-dimensional gel; drying and heat treatment then control its porosity, density, and final structure. In engineering, sol-gel synthesis enables precise fabrication of thin films, coatings, nanoparticles, fibers, and porous monoliths with tailored optical, mechanical, catalytic, or barrier properties. These capabilities support applications in sensors, corrosion protection, energy devices, catalysis, and advanced biomedical materials.

2013

A guided material screening approach to develop sol-gel derived protein doped microarrays using an emerging pin-printing method of fabrication is described. This methodology is demonstrated through the development of acetylcholinesterase and multikinase microarrays, which are used for cost-effective small-molecule screening.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Gel Purification

Gel purification is used to recover DNA fragments after electrophoretic separation. DNA recovery from an agarose gel includes three basic steps: binding, washing and eluting from a silica column. DNA is believed to bind to silica in the presence of high salt via a salt bridge. Following binding, DNA is washed of impurities and eluted under low salt conditions disrupting this interaction. This video goes through a step-by-step, generalized procedure for cutting out a band from the gel, gel...

DNA Gel Electrophoresis

DNA gel electrophoresis is a technique used for the detection and separation of DNA molecules. An electric field is applied to a gel matrix comprised of agarose, and within the gel, charge particles will migrate and separate based on size. The negatively charged phosphates of the DNA backbone cause DNA fragments to move toward the anode - a positively charged electrode. The video explains the mechanism by which DNA fragments are resolved on an agarose gel, and it provides a step-by-step...
