Underwater Projects

Underwater projects are engineering efforts that design, build, monitor, or maintain structures and systems in submerged environments, where water conditions strongly influence safety, performance, and cost. Engineers account for hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy, currents, drag, corrosion, and water ingress by selecting suitable materials, controlling stability, and using specialized tools such as remotely operated vehicles, sensors, and sealed equipment. These projects support offshore energy, marine transportation, scientific observation, environmental monitoring, and subsea infrastructure. Their development advances reliable methods for working in challenging environments while improving access to underwater resources and habitats.

Fischer Projections

2023

Learning to draw Fischer projections of molecules and understanding their relevance plays a crucial role in the visual depiction of organic molecules. A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional projection on a planar surface to simplify the three-dimensional wedge–dash representation of molecules. This is especially helpful in the case of molecules with multiple chiral centers that can be difficult to draw. Here, all the bonds of interest are represented as horizontal or vertical lines. While...

Different notations are used to represent the three-dimensional structure of molecules on two-dimensional surfaces. One of the most commonly used representations is the dash-wedge formula. The dashed wedges, solid wedges, and the plane lines indicate the groups situated behind the plane, coming out of the plane, and in the plane, respectively. The organic molecules rotate across the single bonds leading to numerous temporary three-dimensional structures of varying energy known as conformers.

Coordinates and Map Projections

Coordinates and map projections are essential tools in accurately representing the Earth's surface for various applications, ranging from navigation to spatial analysis. The latitude and longitude coordinate system is a universally recognized framework for defining locations. Latitude specifies the distance of a point north or south of the equator, measured in degrees from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude indicates a location's position east or west of the prime meridian,...

Choosing Between Projects: Limited Resources

In capital budgeting, selecting positive NPV projects adds value to a company. Although businesses ideally pursue all positive NPV projects, managers often face budget constraints that limit the amount of capital they can invest within a given period. In such cases, the goal is to maximize the total NPV while staying within budget limits. For example, a chocolate manufacturing company has a $100,000 budget and two projects under consideration. Project A requires an investment of $80,000, with...

Born Normalization for Fluorescence Optical Projection Tomography for Whole Heart Imaging

2009

We suggest a Born normalized approach for Optical Projection Tomography (BnOPT) that accounts for the absorption properties of imaged samples to obtain accurate and quantitative fluorescence tomographic reconstructions. We use the proposed algorithm to reconstruct the fluorescence molecular probe distribution within small animal organs.
