Nitrogen 15 Fertilization

Nitrogen-15 fertilization is a tracer-based method that uses the stable isotope ¹⁵N in fertilizer to follow nitrogen through soil, plants, and the environment. Because ¹⁵N behaves chemically like the more abundant ¹⁴N but can be distinguished by isotope-ratio analysis, researchers can quantify fertilizer uptake, retention, transformation, and loss. In environmental research, this approach clarifies nitrogen cycling, including movement through plant biomass, soil organic matter, and processes such as leaching or gaseous loss. The resulting measurements support improved fertilizer-use efficiency, assessment of agricultural pollution, and development of nutrient-management strategies that reduce environmental impacts.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...

Many organic, inorganic, and biological molecules contain spin-half nuclei such as nitrogen-15, fluorine-19, and phosphorus-31. As a result, NMR studies of these nuclei have found extensive applications in chemical and biological research. While fluorine-19 and phosphorous-31 have high natural abundances (100%) and positive gyromagnetic ratios, nitrogen-15 has a low natural abundance and a negative gyromagnetic ratio. However, nitrogen-15 is still preferred over nitrogen-14 (which has a high...
