Particle Shape Measurement

Particle shape measurement is the quantitative characterization of a particle’s geometry, including size-independent features such as angularity, roundness, elongation, and surface form. In environmental research, imaging systems or microscopy capture particle outlines, which software analyzes to calculate descriptors such as aspect ratio, circularity, sphericity, and projected area. These measurements help distinguish mineral grains, soil aggregates, sediments, and particulate pollutants, revealing how particles formed, moved, settled, or interact with water and contaminants. Consistent shape data support sediment transport models, soil and water quality studies, filtration design, and assessment of environmental processes that depend on particle behavior.

Measuring the Shape and Size of Activated Sludge Particles Immobilized in Agar with an Open Source Software Pipeline

2019

The size and shape of particles in activated sludge are important parameters that are measured using varying methods. Inaccuracies arise from non-representative sampling, suboptimal images, and subjective analysis parameters. To minimize these errors and ease measurement, we present a protocol specifying every step, including an open source software pipeline.

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.

Morphometric Analyses of Shape: The Analysis Software Toolbox for Craniofacial Shape Quantification in Zebrafish
