Anisotropic Polymeric Particles

Anisotropic polymeric particles are polymer-based colloidal particles whose shape, surface chemistry, or internal composition varies with direction, giving them properties that differ from those of spherical, uniform particles. Their directional behavior arises because uneven geometry or patterned surfaces create nonuniform interactions with fluids, interfaces, and other particles; fabrication methods can introduce these features through controlled assembly, selective modification, or phase separation. In environmental research, anisotropic particles are investigated for contaminant capture, interfacial transport, sensing, and pollutant-remediation systems, where orientation and selective binding can influence mobility and performance. Understanding these structure–function relationships supports the design of more efficient materials for water treatment and environmental monitoring.

Encapsulation and Permeability Characteristics of Plasma Polymerized Hollow Particles

We have used plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition to deposit thin films ranging from a few nm to several 100 nm on nano-sized particles of various materials. We subsequently etch the core material to produce hollow nanoshells whose permeability is controlled by the thickness of the shell. We characterize the permeability of these coatings to small solutes and demonstrate that these barriers can provide sustained release of the core material over several days.

Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.
