Nectar-producing Glands

Nectar-producing glands, commonly called nectaries, are specialized plant tissues that secrete nectar to attract pollinators and influence plant reproduction. They produce nectar by transporting water and sugars from vascular tissues into secretory cells, where membrane transporters and metabolic pathways regulate synthesis, concentration, and release; environmental conditions and plant hormones can also modify secretion. In genetics, studying nectaries helps researchers identify genes controlling gland development, sugar metabolism, volatile compounds, and pollinator interactions. This work clarifies how floral traits evolve, supports breeding for improved pollination, and may inform research on plant reproductive success and ecological adaptation.

Here we describe an efficient strategy to remove the silk-producing glands from the abdomen of female black widow spiders. This procedure allows the rapid isolation of the seven distinct silk-producing glands in a highly purified fashion, an important process for investigators studying spider silk production and fiber assembly.

Larval Lymph Gland Dissection: Isolating the Drosophila Hemocyte-Producing Organ

This video describes the Drosophila lymph gland—the primary site of hematopoiesis in the fly larva—and shows an example protocol to dissect and mount the organ for immunohistochemistry and fluorescent imaging.

Gastric Fundic Glands Isolation: A Method to Isolate Fundic Glands from Human Stomach Tissue

2023

This video describes a method to isolate gastric epithelial cells from the human fundic tissue. The isolated epithelial cells can be used as an in vitro model to study their regulatory roles in gastric physiology and pathophysiology.

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.
