Left Lung

The left lung is the respiratory organ on the heart’s left side, responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide while contributing to local immune defense. Air travels through the left main bronchus into upper and lower lobes, where branching bronchioles terminate in alveoli; thin air-blood barriers allow diffusion, while mucus, cilia, epithelial cells, and alveolar macrophages help remove or neutralize inhaled microbes. Its anatomy, including the cardiac notch and pleural covering, is important when interpreting imaging, sampling respiratory tissues, or studying infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis. Understanding left-lung structure supports research on host-pathogen interactions, inflammation, and targeted respiratory therapies.
