Longitudinal Efficacy Testing

Longitudinal efficacy testing is the repeated assessment of an intervention’s performance over time, revealing whether its effects persist, change, or weaken. In immunology and infection research, investigators follow the same subjects, samples, or experimental systems at defined intervals and compare measurements such as pathogen burden, clinical outcomes, immune responses, or protection against baseline and control groups. This time-resolved approach distinguishes short-term activity from durable efficacy and can identify delayed effects, relapse, waning immunity, or treatment resistance. It supports evaluation of vaccines, antimicrobial therapies, and immune-based interventions while strengthening evidence about durability, safety, and the conditions that influence long-term protection.

Longitudinal Research

2020

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement assesses arterial stiffness by a tonometry-based system that measures the speed with which arterial pressure wave travels along the arterial tree, typically approximating the time that it takes this wave to travel from the descending aorta (using the carotid artery as a surrogate) to the femoral artery. Carotid-femoral PWV increases two- to threefold across the adult lifespan.

Testing the Efficacy of Pharmacological Agents in a Pericardial Target Delivery Model in the Swine

We have developed a swine model for the target delivery of pharmacological agents within the pericardial space/fluid. Using this approach, the relative benefits of administered agents on induced atrial fibrillation, relative refractory periods and/or ischemic protection can be investigated.

Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Wood is a ubiquitous material that has been used in construction from the earliest times. Wood is a renewable, sustainable material with great aesthetic value. Today, there are probably more buildings constructed with wood than any other structural material. Many of these buildings are singlefamily residences, but many larger apartment buildings, as well as commercial and industrial buildings,...
