Adenoma Resection

Adenoma resection is the removal of an adenoma, a typically benign glandular or epithelial tumor, to relieve symptoms, prevent local complications, or reduce the risk of malignant transformation. Depending on the lesion’s location and size, clinicians excise it endoscopically or through open or minimally invasive surgery, then control bleeding and assess the specimen histologically for complete removal, dysplasia, or cancerous change. Common applications include resection of adenomas in the colon, pituitary gland, and other organs, where the procedure can provide tissue for definitive diagnosis and guide further treatment or surveillance.

Three-dimensional culture in alginate beads, due to its simplicity and reproducibility, was chosen to maintain the pituitary adenoma cells. The procedures included an initial enzymatic digestion and mechanical dissociation of the tumor tissue, and the subsequent cell suspension was encapsulated in alginate beads.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...
