Ceramic Veneer Preparation

Ceramic veneer preparation is a restorative dental procedure that conservatively reshapes the visible surfaces of teeth to receive thin, custom-made ceramic coverings, improving color, contour, and proportion. The clinician evaluates occlusion and tooth structure, removes a controlled amount of enamel when indicated, refines the preparation margins, records the prepared teeth, and provides provisional protection while the veneers are fabricated. At delivery, the ceramic is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, and bonded to enamel with adhesive resin after appropriate surface conditioning. This technique supports esthetic rehabilitation for discoloration, minor shape abnormalities, and selected spacing concerns while preserving more natural tooth structure than full-coverage crowns.

Veneer refers to a thin sheet of wood, typically produced to a thickness of about one-eighth of an inch or less. This material is crafted through various methods, the most common being rotary cutting. In this process, a log is mounted into a large lathe and spun against a knife edge, peeling off a continuous strip of wood as the knife penetrates deeper into the rotating log, creating a rotary-cut veneer. Other veneering techniques include plain-slicing, quarter-slicing, and rift-slicing. These...
