Shivering Prophylaxis

Shivering prophylaxis refers to measures used to prevent or reduce involuntary muscle activity caused by perioperative or postanesthetic hypothermia. It works by limiting heat loss, restoring core temperature with active warming, and, when appropriate, modifying the hypothalamic thermoregulatory response with pharmacologic agents. Clinicians may use prewarming, warmed intravenous fluids, forced-air warming, temperature monitoring, or medications selected according to the patient’s condition and procedure. Effective prophylaxis improves comfort, reduces oxygen consumption and metabolic demand, and may help prevent complications associated with vigorous shivering during recovery from anesthesia or other medical interventions.

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a complication of abdominal surgery leading to increased morbidity and a prolonged hospital stay. Because prophylactic or therapeutic strategies are lacking intensified research is necessary. Therefore we established a standardized and feasible mouse model to investigate the pathophysiology of POI and to study potential therapeutic options.
