Ventromedial Medulla

The ventromedial medulla is a region of the brainstem that integrates sensory, autonomic, and defensive responses, making it an important hub for regulating pain and bodily state. In particular, the rostral ventromedial medulla receives signals from higher centers such as the periaqueductal gray and sends descending projections to the spinal dorsal horn, where serotonergic and other neurotransmitter systems can inhibit or facilitate nociceptive signaling. Studying this circuitry helps explain how the nervous system adjusts pain sensitivity, stress responses, and autonomic function. It also provides a framework for investigating chronic pain mechanisms and identifying targets for analgesic therapies.

Brainstem: Control Centers of Medulla

2025

The medulla oblongata is a crucial part of the brainstem responsible for controlling various autonomic and involuntary functions. It contains several nuclei, including the olivary, cuneate, gracile, and solitary nuclei. Olivary Nucleus The olivary nucleus, or inferior olivary nucleus, is located within the ventrolateral part of the medulla oblongata. It is primarily involved in motor coordination and motor learning. The olivary nucleus receives input from the spinal cord, cerebellum, and motor...

Sympathetic Pathways: Collateral Ganglia and Adrenal Medulla

2025

The sympathetic pathways of the collateral ganglia and adrenal medulla serve unique but interconnected roles in the sympathetic response. Collateral Ganglia Sympathetic preganglionic axons reach the collateral ganglia along the route of splanchnic nerves. These nerves bypass the sympathetic trunk and communicate with sympathetic postganglionic neurons housed in the prevertebral ganglia. These ganglia supply the organs of the abdominopelvic cavity. The greater splanchnic nerve, formed by the...

Membrane Potential Dye Imaging of Ventromedial Hypothalamus Neurons From Adult Mice to Study Glucose Sensing

2013

The activity of single neurons from adult-aged mice can be studied by dissociating neurons from specific brain regions and using fluorescent membrane potential dye imaging. By testing responses to changes in glucose, this technique can be used to study the glucose sensitivity of adult ventromedial hypothalamic neurons.

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Whole Kidney, Medulla, and Cortical Tubules in Diabetic Pathogenesis of Kidney Injury in Mice
