Sotalol Beta Blocking

Sotalol beta blocking refers to the beta-adrenergic antagonist activity of sotalol, a medication used to influence cardiac rate and rhythm. As a nonselective beta blocker, sotalol inhibits sympathetic stimulation at beta receptors, slowing sinus rate, reducing atrioventricular conduction, and lowering myocardial workload; it also blocks potassium channels, prolonging cardiac repolarization. These combined actions support treatment of certain supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias and can help maintain normal heart rhythm. Because repolarization is prolonged, sotalol may lengthen the QT interval and increase the risk of torsades de pointes, making dose selection, renal function, and electrocardiographic monitoring important in pharmacological practice.

Beta

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Imaging Amyloid-Beta Plaques in Brain Tissue Sections by Immunolabeling and Curcumin Staining

Source: Maiti, P. et. al.,. Labeling and Imaging of Amyloid Plaques in Brain Tissue Using the Natural Polyphenol Curcumin. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the imaging procedure of amyloid-beta plaques in brain tissue sections using immunolabeling and curcumin staining. Immunolabeling provides specificity for amyloid-beta, while curcumin selectively binds β-sheet-rich fibrils, enhancing visualization. The co-localization of red and green fluorescence confirms the presence of plaques.

Herein we report a tailored HPLC purification protocol that yields high-purity amyloid beta 42 (Aβ42) and amyloid beta 40 (Aβ40) peptides, capable of oligomer formation. Amyloid beta is a highly aggregation prone, hydrophobic peptide implicated in Alzheimer's disease. The amyloidogenic nature of the peptide makes its purification a challenge.

Evaluating Mutation Frequency in Bacteria Using the Beta-Glucosidase Assay

Source: Stefan, A., et al. The Multifaceted Benefits of Protein Co-expression in Escherichia coli. J. Vis. Exp. (96), (2015).This video demonstrates the evaluation of mutation frequency in bacteria using a beta-glucosidase assay. Bacterial cultures expressing a proofreading-deficient DNA polymerase are collected over successive generations. Replication errors caused by reduced proofreading may activate a suppressed beta-glucosidase gene. After centrifugation and permeabilization, a substrate is...
