Analog Ammeter

An analog ammeter is an electrical instrument that measures current by displaying its magnitude with a physical pointer on a calibrated scale. Connected in series with a circuit, it uses a low-resistance current path, often a shunt resistor, to produce a controlled voltage drop; in moving-coil designs, the resulting magnetic interaction generates torque that deflects the pointer in proportion to current. Analog ammeters help students and researchers visualize current changes, verify circuit behavior, and identify faults during experiments. Their continuous pointer movement can also reveal fluctuations and trends that may be less apparent in a single digital reading, while proper connection and range selection protect both the instrument and circuit.

An ammeter is a current measuring instrument. In the circuit, it is represented by the symbol A. The ammeter is placed in series with the device or component to measure the current. A series connection is used because objects in series have the same current passing through them. If a circuit has multiple resistors and the current needs to be measured in each resistor, the number of ammeters required depends on whether the circuit is in series or parallel. When an ammeter is used to measure the...

Source: Dembowski, J. A., Deluca, N. A. Purification of Viral DNA for the Identification of Associated Viral and Cellular Proteins. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the infection of stationary-phase mammalian cells with HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus-1), followed by replication of the viral genome using host and viral replication machinery. A synthetic nucleoside analog is incorporated into newly synthesized viral DNA to label replicating genomes, which are subsequently isolated for...
