Adolescent Identity Formation

Adolescent identity formation is the psychological process through which young people develop a coherent sense of who they are, what they value, and how they relate to others. It works through ongoing exploration of roles, beliefs, goals, and relationships, followed by choices or commitments shaped by cognitive maturation, social feedback, family and peer contexts, and cultural expectations. Psychologists study this process to understand changes in self-concept, autonomy, belonging, and emotional adjustment during adolescence. Insights from identity research inform education, counseling, and prevention programs by helping adults support healthy exploration while recognizing difficulties such as confusion, isolation, or rigid self-definition.
