Brain Damage Assessment

Brain damage assessment is the systematic evaluation of changes in brain structure, function, and behavior after injury, disease, or other neurological disruption. In psychology, clinicians combine medical history, behavioral observation, neurological examination, and standardized neuropsychological tests to measure abilities such as attention, memory, language, executive function, and emotional regulation; brain imaging may provide complementary evidence of structural changes. Comparing performance with expected abilities and, when available, prior functioning helps clarify the nature and severity of impairment. These assessments support diagnosis, rehabilitation planning, monitoring of recovery, and evaluation of how brain changes affect everyday independence, relationships, and quality of life.

Imaging Brain Damage Induced by Cerebral Hypoxia-Ischemia in a Mouse Model

2025

Source: Ouyang, Y., et al. Simultaneous PET/MRI Imaging During Mouse Cerebral Hypoxia-ischemia. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates a technique to assess cerebral hypoxia injury via simultaneous positron-emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An anesthetized mouse undergoes common carotid artery (CCA) ligation, reducing blood flow to one brain hemisphere and predisposing it to hypoxia-induced injury. PET and MRI imaging evaluate glucose metabolism and structural...

Assessing Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity in a Laser-Induced Brain Injury Rat Model

Source: Kuts, R. et al. Laser-Induced Brain Injury in the Motor Cortex of Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates assessing blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity following laser-induced brain injury in rats. A tracking dye is injected into the tail vein, allowing it to circulate to the brain and leak into the tissue through the damaged BBB. The brain is then extracted and processed to release the dye. The fluorescence intensity of the dye is measured to quantify the extent of...

Hematoxylin and Eosin Staining to Assess Colon Damage in DSS-Induced Colitis

2025

This video demonstrates the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining method to evaluate colon damage in a murine model of DSS-induced colitis — an inflammatory bowel disease. Upon isolating the colon from a DSS-treated mouse and obtaining sections of the tissue, H&E staining of the sections helps identify the inflammation-mediated tissue damage.

Neurobehavioral Assessments in a Mouse Model of Neonatal Hypoxic-ischemic Brain Injury

We performed unilateral carotid artery occlusion on postnatal day 7-10 CD-1 mouse pups to create a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) model and investigated the effects of HI brain injury. We studied neurobehavioral functions in these mice compared to non-operated normal mice.
